Vedic Chart - Jyotish — illustration

Vedic astrology - Jyotish - is a separate system from the Western astrology most people know. It uses a different zodiac (sidereal, tracking the actual sky, roughly 23 degrees behind the tropical zodiac), a different house system (whole-sign houses by default), and a different set of interpretive priorities: the ascendant is weighted more heavily, the Moon sign is considered primary for personality, and planetary periods (dashas) give Jyotish a time-prediction structure that Western astrology largely lacks. Your Vedic chart tells a different story than your Western one. Both are worth knowing.

How it works

Enter your birth date, time, and location. The calculator computes your Vedic rising sign (Lagna), Moon sign, Sun sign, and all planetary placements in the sidereal zodiac. You'll see your chart in North Indian or South Indian format (selectable), the current Vimshottari dasha period (major and minor), and interpretations for the major placements - Lagna, Moon sign, and the dominant planetary period.

Understanding your result

The Lagna (ascendant) in Jyotish defines the body, personality, and overall life direction - it's the most important single point in the chart. Your Moon sign describes the mind and emotional nature. The dasha system tells you which planetary period you're in and for how long - a Jupiter dasha tends toward expansion and teaching; a Saturn dasha tends toward discipline and constraint; a Rahu dasha brings sudden movement and obsession. These aren't universal - they interact with your specific chart.

Frequently asked questions

My Vedic Sun sign is different from my Western Sun sign. Which is right?

Both are accurate within their respective systems - they're just measuring different things. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac (fixed to seasons); Vedic uses the sidereal zodiac (fixed to stars). Most people born before late October land one sign earlier in Vedic than in Western.

What is a dasha period and how long does it last?

The Vimshottari dasha is a 120-year cycle divided between nine planets. Each planetary period (mahadasha) runs for a fixed duration: Sun 6 years, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, Ketu 7, Venus 20. Within each mahadasha are sub-periods (antardashas) of the other planets.

Is Jyotish part of the Vedic tradition?

Yes - Jyotish is one of the six Vedangas (auxiliary disciplines of the Vedas), literally meaning 'the eye of the Vedas.' It has a documented history of at least 2,000 years, with Parashara's Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra as its foundational classical text.

Is this for entertainment?

Self-reflection and cultural exploration. Jyotish is a living tradition within Hindu practice - we present it with that context and encourage deeper study for anyone seriously drawn to it.
