About This Widget
The Egyptian Tarot is not a costume version of the Rider-Waite deck. It is a fully reimagined system that maps classical tarot card positions onto the gods, symbols, and cosmological logic of ancient Egypt. Knowing how to read it means understanding both layers: what each position means in standard tarot and what the Egyptian symbolism adds or shifts.
Where the Egyptian Tarot Comes From
Esotericists of the 18th and 19th centuries proposed that tarot had Egyptian origins - this was largely a romantic theory rather than historical fact, but it seeded the creation of genuine Egyptian-inspired decks. The most significant modern Egyptian tarot systems draw on two sources: the Marseille tarot structure (22 Major Arcana, four suits of 14 cards) and the visual vocabulary of Egyptian sacred art: hieroglyphs, papyrus paintings, temple reliefs, and the mythological narratives that structured Egyptian cosmic understanding.
The Major Arcana in an Egyptian deck replaces the Fool, the Magician, and the rest with figures drawn from the Egyptian pantheon. Thoth replaces the Magician - appropriately, since Thoth was the deity of writing, knowledge, and the weighing of souls. Ma'at replaces Justice, which is less a replacement than an origin story: the principle of cosmic balance that Ma'at embodies is the concept that the tarot Justice card was always gesturing toward.
Reading the Egyptian Spread
This deck is drawn in a traditional Egyptian spread, with each position governed by a deity. The structure matters: unlike a generic Celtic Cross, the deity assignments in an Egyptian spread create a kind of divine council for your reading. The card that falls under Ra's position speaks differently than the same card falling under Osiris or Isis - the deity frames what quality of the card's energy is active.
Key Symbols to Read
The ankh (cross with a loop at the top) is the sign of life - when it appears prominently on a card, the reading points toward vitality, continuation, or what is enduring in the situation.
The scarab (Khepri) symbolizes transformation and the sun's journey from darkness to light. A card dominated by scarab imagery is asking about what is emerging, what is in the process of becoming.
The Eye of Ra or Eye of Horus signals perception and protection. In a reading, this symbol draws attention to what you are seeing or not seeing - what requires clearer sight.
The double feather of Ma'at speaks to balance, truth, and the need for honest judgment. When this symbol appears in a reading about a decision, it is pointing toward the choice that aligns with what is genuinely fair and true, not what is convenient.
How to Frame Your Question
Egyptian oracles work best with questions that carry some gravity. This deck was built with the premise that you are consulting the pharaonic tradition - the tradition of people who organized their entire civilization around questions of cosmic order, the soul's journey, and the relationship between the living and the dead. A question phrased with precision and respect draws on that gravity.
Frame your question as clearly as you can, approach the cards with the reverence the pharaohs brought to their oracles, and read what has been carried across millennia to reach you now.
