What Retrograde Motion Actually Is

A planet does not physically reverse direction. Retrograde is an apparent motion: because Earth and other planets orbit the Sun at different speeds, there are periods when a planet appears to slow, stop, and move backward across the sky before resuming forward motion. The retrograde period is bracketed by two "stations" - the exact moment the planet appears to stop and reverse, and the moment it resumes direct motion. What Each Planet's Retrograde Affects

Mercury rules communication, information flow, contracts, short-distance travel, and the reliability of systems we depend on for daily life. Mercury retrograde is not a prohibition - it is a period when these domains require more checking, more clarity in communication, more care with timing. Documents signed, devices purchased, or decisions made in haste during Mercury retrograde have a higher-than-usual rate of needing revision. The standard advice to back things up, proofread, and avoid signing major contracts is sound, not superstitious.

Venus retrograde happens roughly every 18 months and lasts about 40 days. It governs love, values, aesthetics, and what you consider worth having. During Venus retrograde, existing relationships often surface unresolved questions. People from the past reappear. Aesthetic projects (renovations, wardrobe overhauls) that begin here tend to look different once Venus goes direct. The period is better for reassessment than initiation in its domains.

Mars retrograde (every 26 months, lasting 9-11 weeks) governs drive, ambition, assertiveness, and physical energy. When Mars is retrograde, the force that usually pushes outward turns inward. Starting new ventures or making aggressive career moves tends to stall. The period favors revising existing plans, completing unfinished projects, and examining what is actually motivating your actions.

Jupiter retrograde (once yearly, roughly 4 months) pulls the planet of expansion into a reflective mode. The growth that Jupiter usually accelerates outwardly shifts to internal development. Good for philosophical or spiritual deepening, less favorable for launching things that need immediate external momentum.

Saturn retrograde (4-5 months per year) revisits structure, discipline, and long-term commitments. Karmic debts, unfinished obligations, and patterns from the past surface for reckoning. Saturn direct after a retrograde period often marks a point of concrete forward movement on things that felt stalled.
